Dating back to 2014, Chitinor started to modify and optimize the production of thick chitosan monofilaments for use in medical devices. Together with an innovative partner in the dental industry, the fibers have been tailored to meet the very strict criteria for being a significant part of a commercial dental tool. The project and development of our fibers has been developed in a funded project, and the fibers has been commercially available since 2019.

The processing is conducted by a wet-spinning processing technique, tailored and optimized by Chitinor. After the fibers are formed, several rinsing steps, pigmentation (optional) and drying are followed. This ensures a strong fiber with elastomeric properties – but the best part is that the fibers are highly tailorable and safe to use.

The general characteristics of the chitosan makes our chitosan fibers an innovative and versatile product, with several potential usages and applications.

By offering chitosan in filament form, the unique tissue healing and biodegradability features can be exploited in new applications, such as sutures or woven structures in the body or on the skin.

Today we have numerous clients using our chitosan fibers, and our yearly productions exceeds 50 000 meters. The fibers can be used in other usages than the med-tec industry, for example in cosmetics or in the textile industry.
